In mid-December, the San Mateo County Transit District managers announced that the transit agency had retained the services of former San Francisco Supervisor Bevan Dufty, as an interim community relations manager.
Dufty ended his tenure on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors after an eight-year stint and spent all of 2011 running in a crowded field for Mayor of San Francisco. Dufty finished outside the top vote-getters, running a campaign that offended no one, and sticking to broad issues while avoiding controversy.
It was no surprise that Dufty would land a public gig after the election, but many local heads were being scratched when it was revealed that the soft-landing for the San Francisco pol was provided by a San Mateo County agency rather than something within the confines of the City by the Bay. San Francisco and San Mateo Counties have not worked particularly well together over the past few years and hiring a San Francisco political figure to help conduct community relations within San Mateo County seemed counterintuitive at best.
The position Dufty was provided – with no public advertisement of the position by SamTrans – was always described as temporary, but few had any idea just how temporary.
By January 26th, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee announced that he had tapped Dufty to serve as San Francisco’s Homeless Czar, overseeing a range of programs and services designed to assist the homeless in that City.
So how long did Dufty work for SamTrans and how much did San Mateo County taxpayers pay Dufty for a few weeks of employment over the Christmas holiday? Who knows, but heads are still being scratched.
